Juneteenth Celebrations Being Held Across South Florida

The holiday marks the official end of slavery in 1865 when slaves in Galveston, Texas received news that they were free, two years after Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Kechi Okpala with the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Ft. Lauderdale says the news actually reached Florida first by people on horseback. This is a federal holiday so banks, public libraries and the post office are all closed.
