Miami-Dade County's Extreme Heat Season gets underway today.
"Those are the days when the heat index gets over a 100 when, really, a general risk of heat illness for the population, if precautions are not taken," says National Weather Service Miami Meteorologist In Charge Robert Molleda.
Molleda adds, again this year they'll issue Heat Advisories when heat indexes are expected to be at least 105 degrees.
Extreme heat warnings will be issued if the "feels like" temps hit 110 or higher.
"Feels like" temperatures reached 112 degrees in Miami last May, with the city experiencing about 130 days a year with temperatures at least 90 degrees.
Since extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths, to combat the dangerous conditions, the city of Miami is announcing its launching ten cooling centers with air conditioning, bathrooms, water and seating.
Miami-Dade County, itself, offers dozens of libraries, parks and government buildings as cooling sites. Click here to see the list.
