A man is being questioned in the death of his cousin on the Treasure Coast.
The victim, Ernie Smith, was shot and killed at his home in Hobe Sound last night and the cousin waited there for deputies.
"We know there was some type of confrontation that went back and forth but again we're trying to piece together exactly what took place. Because the details matter."
Martin Sheriff John Budensiek says the weapon was recovered nearby, but the man being questioned has not been charged at this time.
He says Smith was well known in the community by law enforcement for his barbecue stand.
"A lifetime Hobe Sound resident. He recently has been selling barbecue at the corner of Pettway Street and A1A. So a lot of people in Hobe Sound know Ernie. He's again been around a long time."
Detectives are interviewing witnesses and reviewing outdoor security footage.
