Palm Coast, FL - A Sanford woman was arrested for shoplifting more than $1,000 in merchandise from a Palm Coast Walmart while playing a game called "21."
Amber McCann, 30, faces a multitude of charges after deputies apprehended her on Monday evening.
According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, a vigilant citizen reported McCann pushing a shopping cart full of merchandise past all checkout points without attempting to pay.
The caller further noted McCann's refusal to present a receipt for the overflowing cart.
The report states McCann transferred the stolen goods, valued at approximately $1,030, to a nearby vehicle before attempting to flee on foot upon realizing she was observed.
Deputies arrived to find the vehicle containing the stolen items and quickly located McCann approaching the store.
Confronted by deputies, McCann initially admitted to stealing the merchandise and placing it in a random car.
Body camera footage captured McCann describing her actions as a game called "21," where the objective is to steal as much merchandise as possible and evade capture.
"Well, I did it one other time and this time, but I got caught this time," McCann is quoted as saying in the footage.
She expressed concern about retrieving her purse and stolen items before a deputy countered, "Well, it's not really a game."
McCann's insistence that shoplifting is a game prompted the deputy's response, "To you. That's theft."
Despite the legal ramifications, McCann downplayed the severity, even describing the act as "fun."
Following her initial statements, McCann's story shifted.
She claimed the car belonged to her boyfriend, who was unaware of her criminal activity.
A search of the vehicle revealed a partially burnt marijuana cigarette, a digital scale, drug paraphernalia, and various illegal substances including hashish, methamphetamine, and alprazolam.
Additionally, deputies discovered a locked safe containing precious metals.
McCann now faces charges of grand theft, possession of marijuana, hashish, alprazolam, drug paraphernalia, and trafficking in methamphetamine.
Her bond is set at $34,000.
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly commended the observant citizen for their role in apprehending McCann.
He emphasized, "If she really thought she was playing a shoplifting game, she lost to our deputies and observant citizens... Another out-of-town resident 'just stealing material things' from a big box store learned the hard way we enforce the laws in Flagler County and it's illegal to steal."
