WATCH: Miami-Dade Police Officer Gives Update On Officer Shot In the Face

Five people are detained for questioning after a Miami-Dade Police officer was shot in the face in Miami Gardens.

Director Stephanie Daniels says the 29-year-old officer, with the crime suppression team, was doing surveillance in the area of Northwest 154th Street and 19th Avenue at the time. "He was wearing his vest, and we do believe that the vest has caused him to be able to go home and be with his family. Yes. None the less, subjects fired upon our officer, and we could have been dealing with something definitely tragic, more tragic today."

She would not go into details about why the officer was surveilling the area.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava calls the injured officer a hero from a law enforcement family who is standing strong and in good spirits.
