Key Largo, FL - A federal officer armed with an AR-15 was shot and killed by deputies in South Florida on Wednesday.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says 48-year-old Lane Caviness, a TSA federal flight deck officer, was shot and killed during a shooting at the Key Largo Ocean Resort.

Officials say detectives responded to the resort and found Caviness intoxicated on Wednesday.

Caviness walked out on a balcony armed with a gun, but dropped it when ordered to do so by police.

Caviness then walked back inside the home and emerged on the balcony again, this time armed with an AR-15.

Monroe Sheriff Rick Ramsay tells Local 10 News Caviness warned he was “ready for battle!” before pointing the AR-15 "at the officers at which time the officers had no other choice but to engage him. Four of my officers, detectives, and deputies discharged their firearms at him.”

Local 10 News reports witnesses heard someone screaming “you are going to kill me! You are going to kill me!” followed by gunshots.

Deputies put tourniquets on Caviness and called Fire Rescue personnel who pronounced him dead at the scene.
